Join photographer John Tunney and a small group of other photographers for a 6 day/5 night photo adventure in Iceland – the magical land of fire, ice, puffins, ponies, elves, trolls and much more.
The adventure begins in the mid-May shoulder season, a time when spring has started to pop and the days extend late into the evening for extended photo opportunities in golden hours and twilight. We’ll journey along Iceland’s famed southern coast, photographing majestic waterfalls, glaciers, icebergs, mountains, black sand beaches, mysterious rock formations, and the ice covered “diamond” beach. We’ll take a private tour in a Zodiac through a glacier lagoon, allowing us to get up close to the glacier and icebergs. Along the way we’ll stay in three star hotels in the countryside where we can relax and recharge and dine on the local cuisine.
John will pick you up Monday morning in Reykjavik. We’ll head up into an area known as the Golden Circle to visit Pingvallir National Park, a place not only of great natural beauty, but also historic and geologic significance. There’s a spot known as the Mid-Atlantic Rift where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. From Pingvallir we’ll head to Geysir, a geothermal area that gave its name to Yellowstone’s Old Faithful and all of the the other Geysirs in the world. Then it’s onto the mighty Gullfoss, the golden waterfall. We’ll spend the night on the area.
This morning we head south to the coast. We’ll visit magnificent waterfalls, moss-covered lava fields, the river canyon Fjaðrárgljúfur and more. We’ll spend the night in the area.
Days 3 & 4
We’re onto Skaftafell and the Vatnajökull National Park known for its glacier, mountains and Svartifoss, the “black” waterfall. From here we head for Jokusarlon, home to Iceland’s most famous glacier lagoon.. We’ll spend two nights in the Jokusarlon area, exporing Skaftafell, the galcier lagoons, diamond beach and surrounding areas. We’ll also take a private tour in a Zodiac for close-up views of the glacier and icebergs.
From here we head for Vik, Icleand’s southern most town and the famous black sand beach, basalt rock formations (said to be the bodies of trolls turned to stone when they were caught out in the sunlight). The area is also known for puffins and other seabirds. If the light is right we’ll head out after dinner to catch the setting sun against one of the Iceland’s most beautiful waterfalls.
We’ll leave Vik in morning, photographing sites along the Southern coast as we head back to the Reykjanes peninsula and Keflavik airport to fly home. All good things must come to an end – but you’ll leave with plenty of great pictures and memories.
