Join Massachusetts-based night photographer Jürgen Lobert for a two-part program to introduce photographers to light painting and light drawing at night.
Adding artificial light to photos taken at night can be done through a number of techniques. Light painting adds additional light to existing surfaces, but light drawing is one of the few techniques where a photographer can actively create unique and intriguing content, rather than simply photographing the existing scenery.
The program begins Saturday, July 15 from 8:30-11 p.m. with a field shoot on the Cape to practice techniques for light painting the foreground and light drawing in front of the camera. Jürgen will not be taking photos, but will assist attendees with setup, camera settings, exposure, creativity and composition. If more than 10 people sign up, there will be a second instructor to maximize instructor time for everyone. Jürgen will bring a number of light tools, but attendees are encouraged to bring their own. After signing up, each person will get eBooks on how to prepare the camera and the basic light painting and drawing techniques, as well as a list of what equipment to bring, what to wear and the exact meeting location.

Part two will be held a week later on Saturday, July 22, from 3-6 p.m. Attendees will upload 3-5 of their edited images created during the photo shoot prior to the event and Jürgen will provide constructive critique for each image, followed by suggestions on what could have been done differently, both in front of the camera as well as in post processing. Night photos and particularly light paintings need very specific editing approaches. Through live edits in Lightroom and Photoshop, Jürgen will share his favorite editing techniques for this kind of photography, along with tips and tricks for Lightroom, and attendees can pick his brain about all topics.
Pre-requisites for the photo shoot are a camera with manual settings (exposure time, aperture, ISO and white balance), a tripod, a remote control or built-in long exposures, a wide angle to medium zoom lens and a good familiarity with their equipment.
