Betsy Payne Cook

This class is devoted to the experience of painting on location. Any medium is welcome but you must have a working knowledge of you medium

Betsy’s medium of choice is pastels but information shared will apply to other drawing & painting mediums as well.

Painting outdoors is an exhilarating experience, and this workshop is ideal for artists who want to take the challenge of stepping outdoors to paint! Whether you are a novice or an experienced painter, the opportunity to paint outdoors is rewarding. I notice that my time plein air painting makes a difference to how I approach pastel painting when I am in my studio, thoughtful choices paired with spontaneity.

This workshop will take place at a destination a short drive from Cape Cod Art Center.  I will start with a demonstration that will include pointers for setting up on location, narrowing the field of vision, importance of thumbnail sketches and painting the values in the landscape. When on location, you will have time to sketch and paint with individual feedback at your easel.  If the weather is not cooperative, we will paint at CCAC and I will share strategies for using photo references and sketches to achieve a spontaneous approach when painting.

You will need a sketchbook, drawing materials ( pencils or charcoal sticks) , viewfinder, your painting supplies, several small format paintings surfaces ( 8 x10 , 9X12) and an easel. I will be happy to try to assist you if you do not have an easel.  Please remember to bring sunscreen, bug repellent, water, a hat with a visor and your camera. Pastel Painters will need to have a range of values. It might also be useful to have a camp chair. Keep materials light and easy to carry, you do not have to bring all your paintings supplies.  I will choose a location that will give you the option to paint a short distance from your car. I will have some viewfinders for sale and always have pastel papers, some are suitable for wet mediums. Artist’s umbrella is helpful but optional.

I welcome you to come at 8 am to scout out locations to paint. My demo with begin at 8:30.
