Expressive Digital Imagery with Steve Koppel

Date: Friday, July 13

Time: 7pm-9pm

Cost: $40 (All proceeds will benefit the EDI Institute)

Description:

Expressive Digital Imagery® (EDI) is a new form of expression made possible by the merger of technology and art – and it’s working!

Through a highly specialized mobile app, EDI allows for the creation of digital images easily and without the need for any particular artistic or technical skills. EDI allows virtually anyone to express complex feelings and thoughts in ways beyond what is often possible through words alone. Additionally, EDI is frequently used therapeutically by those facing challenges such as mental illness, cancer, and addiction.
Retired after 20 years as a management consultant with Accenture, Steven Koppel found inspiration for his next endeavor at the intersection of photography as an artistic hobby, and medical challenges he and his family faced. In 2013, Steve founded the EDI Institute as a non-profit dedicated to promoting healing, connection, and self-expression through imagery people create on mobile devices. To date, over 4,000 individuals have created more than 14,000 EDI images both independently and also in leading organizations including Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Yale New Haven Health, and McLean Hospital.
Steve will speak about the evolution of EDI, share examples of EDI’s therapeutic application in a broad range of settings, present an interactive EDI demonstration, and discuss future implications and opportunities for EDI.

Bio:

Steve spent 20 years as a management consultant with Accenture, leaving in 2002 to volunteer with non-profit organizations to help maximize social impact. Steve’s work includes serving on the board of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and roles with several other healthcare organizations including McLean Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Gosnold on Cape Cod.

Steve took up photography initially as a hobby in 2010, and his own imagery became unexpectedly therapeutic when his family experienced difficult medical challenges. This realization led Steve to found the EDI Institute (www.ediinstitute.org) in 2013 as a charitable organization. Through Expressive Digital Imagery® (EDI), the EDI Institute promotes healing, connection, and self-expression through digital imagery created on mobile devices. To date, over 4,000 individuals facing challenges including mental illness, cancer, and addiction have created more than 14,000 EDI images. Steve is passionate about EDI, and brings his business expertise, his commitment to helping others, and his love of digital imagery in leading efforts to integrate EDI into healthcare organizations nationally.

Steve’s own imagery seeks to convey the deep connection he has with Cape Cod, a place he and his family have cherished for over 30 years. A Brewster resident, Steve is represented locally by the FOCUS Gallery in Chatham and donates all proceeds from the sale of his work to the EDI Institute. Recently, Steve has begun collaborating with the Association to Preserve Cape Cod. His goal is to create imagery that documents important environmental issues while also evoking emotional response from viewers.
