Jesse Ensling Sculpture Artist My work in stone carving started in college when I had to take a sculpting class towards my degree. Searle Lansing-Jones had a strict, hard reputation but, I found him to be a wonderful man who became my first mentor. He encouraged me to go to Italy to study marble carving with Milo Lazaravic in Pietrasanta, Italy through Columbia University’s Teacher’s College.
Returning, I studied at The New School with Phillip Pavia working with a hand chisel and hammer. Now at the School of Visual Arts with Barbara Segal has introduced me to digital carving but, found pneumatics my favored choice. These great sculptors have given me their knowledge, encouragement to grow and have shaped my appreciation for stone carving and its texture, strength and density.
Carving each piece from picking out the stone to mounting it for a show is all part of the process that is so very gratifying. Seeing it as a rough stone and being able to visualize what will be on the pedestal is amazing.
Stone Carving connects me to this ancient form of expression and gave me my voice to express my love of nature. I am currently working a series of shells in exotic stones that are true to nature. My style is both realistic and impressionistic. www.JesseEnslingSculptures.com
