Mixed Media Hummingbird Painting with Layane Smith

In this three-part class, students will create a bold and expressive hummingbird painting using a variety of mixed media techniques. Layering acrylic paint with stencils, rollers, oil pens, and collage, participants will explore color, movement, and personal expression. This is a playful, inspiring project that welcomes all skill levels and encourages creative freedom.
Teens (13+) and Adults both welcome! Beginners welcome!
Materials Needed:
(Each participant should bring the following)
- Canvas or canvas panel (approx. 16”x20” or 14”x14”)
- Acrylic paints (variety of transparent , opaque , bright and neutral colors)
- Any stencils you like (nature-inspired shapes, textures, or patterns)
- Paint rollers (small foam rollers)
- Spray bottle with water
- Oil-based paint pens (e.g. white, black, gold or metallic tones)- I would recommend at least black and white
- Variety of Paintbrushes for acrylic ( 1 large brush , 1 medium filbert size 6-10, 1 square brush size 4 or 6, , 1 small round size 0 or1 )
- Palette or mixing surface
- pencil and eraser
- Water container and paper towels
- gloss medium gel for collage
- Apron or old shirt
- variety of papers to be used on collage ( tissue paper, newspaper, textured paper, book pages , etc)
- painter’s tape
