This is a supportive, low-pressure environment perfect for artists who are new to portrait and figure painting or who want to build confidence before painting from life. (Working from photo references).
This beginner-friendly class introduces students to the fundamentals of painting the human figure and portrait in oil — with an emphasis on placing the subject in a meaningful environment. Working from carefully selected photo references, students will explore how to build a strong composition, capture accurate proportions, and bring life to the figure using the expressive, direct alla prima (wet-into-wet) painting technique.
Through step-by-step demonstrations and plenty of individualized guidance, students will learn how to simplify complex forms, understand light and shadow, mix realistic skin tones, and use color and brushwork to convey atmosphere. The figure won’t stand alone — students will also consider background, setting, and how the figure interacts with its environment to create a compelling narrative.
No previous portrait or figure drawing experience required, but basic oil painting familiarity is recommended.
