Travel sketching isn’t about creating perfect drawings—it’s about paying attention, capturing a

moment, and creating a personal record of your experiences.

Whether you’ve never drawn before or already keep a sketchbook, this workshop will introduce

approachable techniques that can add sketches and visual notes to your travels.

The journey continues and is designed as a follow-up to our first travel sketching workshop!

This time, we’ll leave Lucca behind and travel together to Place Reial in Barcelona, using the square as a starting point for exploring how a place can become a story through sketching.

We’ll begin with an experiential virtual visit to Barcelona, looking closely at the architecture, trees, movement, people, light, and everyday activity that give Place Reial its character. Rather than simply looking at a photograph, we’ll use the virtual experience to imagine ourselves in the place—then translate those observations into sketches and visual notes.

The focus will be on place, story, detail, and connection:

• How do we recognize what makes a place feel like itself?
• What details tell the story of a place?
• How can a quick sketch capture movement, atmosphere, and memory?
• How can sketches become a personal record of being somewhere, not just a picture of what we saw?

We’ll work through approachable exercises in gesture, perspective, observation, and visual note-taking, gradually moving from quick marks toward more focused sketches.

And, as before, we’ll spend time outside putting these ideas into practice before returning to share our sketches together.

No previous drawing experience is necessary. Whether you joined the first workshop or are completely new to travel sketching, this workshop is about slowing down, looking more closely, and finding your own way of recording a place.

Please bring:
• A sketchbook or travel journal
• Pens, pencils, or other favorite drawing materials
• Curiosity and a willingness to look a little more closely at the world around you
