Join botanical watercolorist, Ellen Duarte in pursuing a better understanding of
watercolor theory. Take a deep dive into color mixing and matching. Each week, we will
focus on a different bloom color, sometimes two! We will discuss and practice mixing
local color, highlight colors and shadow colors. Unique methods and techniques will be
used to achieve realistic results.

Materials:
For the first class of each session, please bring drawing materials
If you are unsure, you are welcome to wait until after the first class. I always have extra materials to get you started.
List:
Pencil- any brand drawing pencil, HB,B,2B, or any drawing pencil you have
Paper- White drawing pad, spiral bound, minimum 9×12
Eraser- any white plastic block eraser, putty eraser, and or retractable eraser
Sharpener- any handheld or electric sharpener that makes a sharp point.
Paper, paints, and tools will be reviewed and recommended at the first class. However, a minimum list would include:
2 Kolinski sable pointed round, number 4 or 6
Pad of hot pressed watercolor paper, minimum 9×12
Palette water container paper towels
Professional or artist quality watercolor paints:
Bring what you have. If you have none, and wish to purchase some, Winsor and Newton has a set of 12 professional quality watercolor paints (5 mil. tubes) which I have found on Amazon for as little as $49. This set has a good range of colors to start with. If you prefer to buy individually, the following is a suggested list in order of usefulness. 5 mil. tubes will last a long time, so buy small, if you can. All are Winsor and Newton, but are available in other brands:
Permanent Rose
Winsor Lemon
French Ultramarine
Permanent Sap Green
Payne’s Gray
Scarlet Lake
New Gamboge
Winsor Blue Green Shade
Burnt Sienna
Yellow ochre
Lemon Yellow Nickel Titonate
Other recommended brands are Daniel Smith, Schminke, M.Graham, and several others, as long as they are artist or professional quality.
Some art supply websites are BLICK ART MATERIALS, Jackson Arts, Wind River Arts(brushes) and more. Locally, you can find paints and other decent materials at Michael’s as well as at Woodruff’s at Mashpee Commons and Tree’s Place in Orleans.
