Location: Cape Cod Art Center

Description: This class is a unique opportunity for artists who are looking for a contemporary and creative way of painting this summer. Discover the limitless possibilities of abstract painting, using unique color palettes, dynamic brushwork, and creative formats, all designed to add more expression to your art!

Drawing inspiration from contemporary art and coastal living, Lauren will help you develop your own creative process. Students will experiment with various painting techniques, discover distinct palettes through color studies and learn from hands-on exercises. From soft delicate hues to vibrant bold brushstrokes, you will develop your own individual style that will push the limits of your creativity.

Individual development and creative expression will be at the core of this class, with the benefit of a supportive group setting to share ideas, techniques and inspiration.

Supply list suggested for class:

Optional +$10 supplies fee for students who prefer to use Art Center’s supplies

If you know the medium you want to work in, bring your supplies to the first class, or I can help you decide which path to follow depending on your style and budget.

Paint Materials:

The following colors are recommended as a basic palette for all media.

Individual tubes of:
○ Titanium white – large
○ Yellow ochre
○ Alizarin crimson or Magenta
○ Ultramarine blue
○ Sap Green
○ Viridian Green
○ Cerulean blue
○ Cobalt blue
○ Hansa Yellow or Cadmium Yellow
○ Cadmium Red
○ Dioxazine Purple
○ Burnt Sienna
○ Payne’s Gray

Palette: Plastic or disposable palette paper at least 12”x16”

Brushes: Start with a set or just a few brushes in different shapes and sizes until you know what you like. Princeton brushes come in a variety of sizes at a good price point. Princeton Velvetouch are very popular. For stronger bristle brushes Utrecht Natural Chungking Pure Bristle Brushes
are highly recommended.

Paper towels or rag: Glass jar for water, Graphite or Charcoal Drawing Pencil

Canvas or panel: Stretched, primed canvas or primed gesso board depending on preference

Paper: Watercolor or mixed media paper, 140lbs or higher. Hot press is a smooth surface and cold press has more texture.

Sketch pad or scrap paper for color studies and exercises.

About the Artist: As a fourth generation Cape Codder, Lauren has spent a lot of time following the tides and the weather and the changing seasons, which is distinctly reflected in her paintings. She creates images that dance across the canvas, with a strong element of luminosity and lyrical abstraction. She received her BA (Hons) from the University of New Hampshire and a Post Graduate Diploma in Design from the University of Arts London. While living and working in England, Lauren was a member of the Association of Illustrators in London. She also studied painting and color theory with Christiana Kubrick at ‘Childwickbury Arts’ and exhibited in galleries and art fairs both in London and New York. She has over thirty years of experience working in the visual arts and her artwork has been used in a variety of fields including fine art, publishing, marketing and textile design. She is a member and museum educator at the Cape Cod Museum of Art and enjoys nothing more than seeing people of all ages engage in the creative process. www.quivettcreekstudio.com
