Supply Materials
Click here for my supply list on BLICK: https://www.dickblick.com/lists/blicku/H12H2SG5Q2K5B/
Essentials:
Multimedia Paper:
- 8×10 tablet will be essential for practicing your techniques. I like Canson Multimedia, but other brands are fine. Make sure it can handle all types of mediums.
- 5×7 Sketchbook and small notebook
Pencils:
- A range of pencils with different hardness (e.g., 2B, 4B, 6B) will help you create various types of marks.
- A Lyra pencil (you can buy via Amazon or Blick)
- A layout pencil or wash pencil. This allows you to wet it with a brush to change the mark.
Charcoal:
- Both vine and compressed charcoal are great for creating bold,
expressive marks.
Erasers:
- A kneaded eraser and a regular eraser will be useful for correcting and refining your work.
Markers or Pens:
- A set of black, brown or blue Fine liners, markers, or pens can be used for more precise and controlled mark-making.
- A small set of Copic Pens is a great way to start.
- A ball point pen.
Baby Wipes:
- Easy to keep you and your tools clean.
- I also like Winsor Newton barrier cream for my hands or gloves if working in oil.
Paints:
Buy the best Artist grade {professional) you can afford. They have more pigment, and you’ll use less. You’ll get money’s worth, and they’ll last a long time. Student grade has less pigment. Basically, it’s fat free vs whole.
Suggested Main Colors:
I strongly recommend warm and cool of the primaries. Hue is fine-it will be more transparent.
- Cadmium Yellow Lite (or cad free)
- Cadmium Yellow Med (or cad free)
- Cadmium Red Light and medium (or Cad Free)
- Alizarin Crimson (hue is okay)
- Quinacridone Magenta
- Quinacridone Cobalt
- Quinacridone Ultramarine Blue
- Quinacridone Phthalo Blue
- Quinacridone Titanium White
- Quinacridone Black
- Quinacridone Ivory
Optional: Manganese or Cerulean, Indian Yellow, Dioxide Purple, Prussian Blue, Indigo Blue, Zinc white, Mars Black, plus any colors you prefer.
Brands I generally use:
- Oils: Gamblin (the 1890 brand is fine} or Winsor Newton
- Acrylics: Liquitex/Golden Heavy Body or Liquitex Basics are more fluid and just fine. I love Golden Paint but hate their caps which break or go crooked.
- Watercolor: Da Vinci, Winsor Newton, Holbein, Mameri, Sennelier, Daniel Smith. A good quality paper, my favorite is Fabriano or Bockingford, 140 lb. cold press.
- Pastels: If you are a pastelist, bring what you want. However, be sure to have a range of warm and cool, and tonal colors along with blacks and white. My preference is U Art 400.
Substrates of choice: Canvas, canvas paper, wood, panels, whatever you choose to work on.
Mediums:
- Oils: Two glass containers with twist on lid. Odorless mineral spirits (Gamsol or Mona Lisa). Linseed medium or walnut oil medium-you can get a small one to start. It is important that these are odorless! If you have an old one, check to see if it smells. I’ll give a tip at the first class on how to clean brushes while painting.
- Acrylics: Matte Medium and Glazing Medium.
- Watercolor: Acrylic Glazing Medium Pastels: 70% rubbing alcohol
Miscellaneous:
- Artist white tape
- Foam core or substrate to tack paper to
- Tracing paper
- Large palette (cookie sheet size) My go-to: Masterson Palette for acrylic and oil. Robert E. Wood or John Pike for W/C.
- Water spray bottle
- Sponge
- Blue Shop Towel vs paper towels

Bio: A native San Franciscan and longtime California resident, Victoria discovered multiple forms of creative art everywhere. The abundance of fresh emerging art and old masters works inspired her drawing and painting at an early age. She majored in acting at Loyola Marymount University and studied costume design. For over twenty years she worked in management in the luxury fashion industry. She loved the passion and creative process of designers. In the 1990’s, she explored fashion design and illustration but found her true life passion was fine art painting. In 2000, she studied with Roger Armstrong, a master painter and school founder at the Laguna College of Art and Design. With Roger as her mentor, Victoria learned boldness and to take risks. “It’s only paint and paper” he told her. Roger introduced her to plein air and shared many approaches to outdoor painting. He was one of the first participants in the famous Laguna Beach Invitational for Plein Air. When he died in 2007, the Irvine Fine Art Center asked Victoria to continue his class. She discovered another ardor, teaching. Her approach, like her mentor, encouraged students to lose fear, take risks and view painting as a process. Her key mantra is “Express your voice.” Later in 2015, Victoria and her husband, Bob, retired to Barnstable in Cape Cod. She put teaching aside and focused on building a body of new artwork, trying out new techniques. She occupies studio space at The Old Schoolhouse in Barnstable Village. She is a continuous participant of the CCAC plein air group and contributed to their second 2019 edition of Plein Air Painting on Cape Cod. She received recognition in several Cape Cod exhibitions. She is a juried member of the Cape Cod Art Center and happily teaching again.
“Child-like curiosity and play remains the most important part of my work. When I trust creative energy and stop my critic’s chatter, my paintings reflect the authentic relationship I forged with the subject. I paint in all mediums, using what feels best for me that day. I remember Roger’s motto- It is only paint and paper!” www.victoriatempletonart.com Instragram:@brushandpenmakeart
