Chiaroscuro, meaning “light-dark” in Italian, is a technique used to create the illusion of three-dimensionality through strong contrasts between light and dark. This workshop teaches oil painting and application skills to achieve light, form and depth, with the impact of Chiaroscuro light and shadow. Methods are inspired by artists like Caravaggio, Artemisia Gentileschi, Diego Velazquez, and Rembrandt, who used chiaroscuro to enhance
depth and dimension in their art. The techniques covered are essential for success, accessible to beginners, and challenging for advanced individuals.
Description:
Inspired by the oil painting of the masters, this class will cover the essential skills needed to achieve luminosity and depth with paint. Beginners and experienced oil painters will find their advances made in this class will not only produce beautiful still- lifes but will carry over to their other paintings of landscapes, portraits, and figures, as well. The class consists of instructor demonstrations, starting with the conceptual design of the painting to observing and translating the beauty of objects into lustrous paint. By understanding the structure of a painting and the manipulation of paint into brilliant light, supple color, and purposeful edge variations, an artist can create a compelling and distinguished piece of art.
Bio:
American Artist, b. 1977. Leah is widely recognized for her masterful use of atmospheric lighting, which adds depth and intrigue to her work. Her compositions are carefully crafted to evoke a sense of drama and hint at romantic undertones, inviting viewers to interpret the stories behind
the scenes while leaving details open to the imagination. Each piece captures a moment that feels both engaging and mysterious, drawing the audience into a world of unspoken narratives.
Creating still life and figurative works in oil, Leah draws inspiration from the Baroque’s focus on movement and contrast. In her North Light studio, she connects with artists like Caravaggio, Artemisia Gentileschi, and Waterhouse of the Pre-Raphaelites, who used visual techniques found in tenebrism and chiaroscuro to enhance depth and dimension in their art.
