Cape Cod Winterscapes

Winter on Cape Cod is a special time with unique photo opportunities. Most of the tourists and part time residents are gone. Many businesses are closed. Beaches, harbors and streets are empty. Over several days we will explore Cape Cod’s winterscapes – everything from the natural beauty of the beaches, marshes and woodlands to shuttered business and deserted harbors and streets. We’ll also take advantage of the shorter daylight hours to experiment with low light and night photography. Along the way we’ll work on winter shooting tips, how to improve your eye by “seeing” a scene and compose an image, plus long exposures and camera movement and editing techniques to get your pictures looking their best.
Schedule
The light, tides and weather will be the final guide to the itinerary, but here’s a basic outline:
Friday: We’ll begin Friday at 3pm with a welcome meeting and short classroom session at CCAC and then head out for a sunset field shoot.
Saturday: We start early Saturday morning with sunrise and will keep going through late morning. We’ll break late morning, reconvene in early afternoon for an image review and then head out for a field shoot and continue into early evening.
Sunday: We begin again with an early morning field shoot and continue through mid morning. We’ll then gather at CCAC for an editing and review session, wrapping up between 12 and 1pm.
What to Bring
– Camera. Any camera will work, but you’ll get the most out of the weekend with an interchangeable lens DSLR or mirrorless.
– Extra battery and battery charger.
– Memory cards
– Tripod
– Wide angle and telephoto lenses. I usually carry a 17-28 ultra wide, 24-105 standard zoom and a 100-400 telephoto zoom. A single 24-105 would be fine if you want to keep it light.
– Camera bag
– Camera rain coat or plastic bag for a do-it-yourself version
– Polarizer filter
– Neutral density filter (for long exposures)
– Laptop or tablet with Lightroom and/or Photoshop (alternative editing programs are fine)
Dress for Success.
As they say in Iceland, “There is no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.”
It’s important to be comfortable while we’re outside. I recommend base layers and water and wind resistant outer layers. Also:
– Photographer’s gloves
– Hat
– Waterproof/resistant boots
– Hand warmers if it’s going to be very cold
Accomodations
If coming from off Cape and need a place to stay, the Cove Motel in Orleans or any place in Orleans/Eastham area.

About the Instructor
John Tunney is an award-winning photographer and instructor and author of The Four Seasons of Cape Cod. A frequent exhibitor in art shows and festivals, his work has been featured in a solo exhibition at the Griffin Museum of Photography, Winchester, MA, the Cultural center of Cape Cod, and in many solo and group shows in galleries and other exhibition centers. His images have appeared in Fodor’s Florida, the Guardian newspaper, Iwall Street Journal, Cape Cod Life, Cape Cod magazine, the Cape Codder and in many ads, brochures and websites.
