Exploring the Art of Gelli Plate Printing: An Introduction with Victoria Templeton
Date: July 24, 2025
Time: 12:30pm-3:30pm
Cost: $125 member/ $150 for non-members

Gelli plate printing is an art form that enables artists of various skill levels and backgrounds to create unique and textured prints. The gelli print can be used to create unusual backgrounds, forms, multiple layers and unique images which can be applied to paintings, canvas, paper, textiles. This workshop covers the basics of gelli plate printing: materials, techniques, and creative possibilities. Whether you’re new to printmaking or looking to expand your artistic repertoire, this workshop offers a comprehensive and enjoyable learning experience. Limited to 12 students for personal attention.

What is Gelli Plate Printing?
Gelli plate printing is a form of monoprinting that uses a gelatin-like plate to create one-of-a-kind prints. Unlike traditional printmaking methods, gelli plates do not require a press and are easy to use, making them accessible for artists of all levels. These plates are typically made from a synthetic gelatin material that is durable and reusable.

• Hands-On Practice: You’ll get plenty of time to practice on your own. The workshop is designed to be very interactive, so you’ll be encouraged to experiment with different materials and techniques to create your own unique prints.
• Guidance on Basic Techniques: Throughout the workshop, you’ll receive guidance on basic techniques, such as how to apply paint, create textures, and layer prints. This will help you build your skills and confidence in gelli plate printing.
• Encouragement of Creativity and Experimentation: One of the key aspects of the workshop is to foster creativity and experimentation. You’ll be encouraged to try new things, make mistakes, and learn from them, all in a supportive and fun environment. By the end of this workshop, you’ll have a solid understanding of gelli plate printing techniques and be equipped with the skills to continue exploring this art form independently. Overall, the
workshop is a great way to learn a new art form, meet like-minded people, and have a lot of fun in the process! Warning! Gelli printing is highly addictive!

Materials Needed (all materials supplied except starred *)
To get started with gelli plate printing, you’ll need the following materials (we provide all except an apron and baby wipes):
• Gelli Plate: By Gelli Arts 5×7. Do not substitute with another brand. The results are not the same. This is the foundation of your printing process.
• Acrylic Paints: These are the most commonly used paints for gelli printing due to their quick drying time and vibrant colors. No Open Acrylics!
• Brayer: A small hand roller used to apply paint evenly across the gelli plate.
• Paper: Use any type of paper, but thicker paper or cardstock works best for absorbing paint.
• Stencils and Textures: Items like stencils, leaves, lace, or bubble wrap can create interesting patterns and textures.
• Palette Knife or Old Gift Card: Useful for spreading paint or creating designs on the plate.
• *Apron: To protect your clothing from paint splatters. *Baby Wipes-to clean the gelli and your hands

This workshop is made possible in part by the generous support of the Town of Barnstable and Barnstable Village Cultural District.
