Come explore the beautiful coast of Maine, from the mid-coast region and Monhegan Island
to Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island. Along the way you’ll photograph dramatic
coastlines, working harbors, lobster boats, lighthouses, old New England towns and much
more. We’ll be traveling during the start of Milky Way season, so we’ll take advantage of clear
nights to photograph the stars over Maine’s beautiful scenery.
The workshop is limited to a maximum 8 students. John will offer tips and techniques in the
field and classroom to help you get the most out of your experience in Maine and develop
your skills.
Instruction includes:
– Classic and creative techniques for coastal landscape and travel photography.
– Long exposure and camera movement.
– How to photograph the Milky Way.
– Finding the shot in new places.
– Focus stacking
– Use of filters.
– Editing landscapes and coastal scenes.
Day 1
The adventure begins on the mid-coast, an area of iconic lighthouses, secluded harbors,
lobster boats and rugged shores. We’ll meet in the afternoon for a welcome session to
explore the area. We’ll grab an early supper and then photograph through golden hour and
sunset. If the stars and weather align, we’ll continue into the night for some Milky Way
photography. We’ll spend the night in the Rockland area.
Day 2
We’re up early to photograph more of the mid-coast region and then we’re off to catch the
one-hour ferry to magical Monhegan Island. Arriving on Monhegan is a little like stepping back
in time. There are no cars and many of the buildings date from the early 20 th and late 19 th
century. We’ll explore and photograph the island during the late afternoon and evening and
into the night under some of the darkest and most star-filled locations on the east coast.
Days 3 and 4
This morning we’ll explore more of the island and then catch the ferry back to mainland and
head for Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. In Acadia, we’ll photograph the area’s
dramatic coastline, woodlands and other scenes, including Jordan Pond, Eagle Lake and
more. We’ll have early morning/sunrise, afternoon/sunset and Milky Way sessions, plus time
for image reviews. We’ll be staying in Bar Harbor both nights.
Day 5
We’ll have an early morning field shoot then head back to the hotel for breakfast and wrap-up
before hitting the road for home.
Bonus Session May 28
We’ll meet again via Zoom on the evening of May 28 to review images, discuss processing
tips and answer any questions.
Lodging
Four nights lodging in area hotels is included. Everyone will have their own. Rockland and Bar
Harbor hotels have en suite bathrooms. The Monhegan hotel has what it calls detached
private restrooms and showers.
Getting Around
We’ll meet in the Rockland, ME, area the first day. It’s about four hours from Cape Cod or
three hours from Boston. We’ll travel in our own vehicles to Rockland and Bar Harbor, and
then car pool to the field sessions in order to minimize parking.
