Online Solo Exhibit and Sale of Watercolors and Laser Works by Paul Gaj
August 2023
I was born in Meriden, Connecticut and have lived in the New England towns of Stonington and Mystic, Connecticut and Halifax, Groton and Gardner Massachusetts for more than 60 years. I am a New England Artist.
I started landscape painting with one of those small kits you get at the drug store when I was maybe 7 or 8. I have slowly worked my way up to professional grade pigments and papers since then. What hasn’t changed is my passion for being able to paint what is in front of me or paint what I want to see. I always try to capture the tranquil moments of living on this planet.
I attended the New England School of Art & Design in Boston, MA and the University of Massachusetts in North Dartmouth where I studied graphic and visual design. I also studied drawing at the Paier College of Art in Hamden, CT.
In addition to a prolific career in advertising and design as an Art Director and Corporate Creative Director, I have always been an avid watercolor and acrylic painter. I am a past member artist of the Mystic Art Association in Mystic, CT and the Concord Art Association in Concord, MA. I have taught Advertising Design and Advanced Design at Chester College in Chester, NH and am a Juried Artist Member of the Cape Cod Art Center.
I have exhibited in a number of galleries and shows throughout New England and my paintings hang in many private collections within the continental United States and Hawaii. I currently work from my studio in Gardner, Massachusetts where I am also involved in Corporate Branding, Graphic Design, Architectural Design and Illustration projects for a number of clients throughout the United States.
In 2010, I undertook a personal project to document the BP Oil Disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, which produced a book and a number of inspired paintings and exhibits. Since then, I have focused my work primarily on the New England coast, but also anywhere I end up with a brush and paper.”
Large Watercolors
It is interesting to me how we all react differently to a personal or public crisis. In my case, a brush with a serious illness inspired me to create this set of large watercolor paintings that I had collected sketches and photos from over the years of my favorite places along the New England coast. Each one has a unique story. Please Note: The Nauset Kayaker is the only Framed piece.

Laser Works by Paul Gaj
Laser Works – Sculptures
Speaking of a public crisis — when the Pandemic lockdowns began in 2021, I had to invent a way to make up for lost work and contracts. Always being intrigued by the marriage of technology and art, I invested my time into learning to work with laser cutters.
As a lover of our natural world, I began with my wooden “Species of Earth” series of hand drawn creatures. The first being The Great & Powerful Cod. The Basswood versions were quite suitable for indoor display only. To create an outdoor version, I produced the same cut in surgical stainless-steel mounted on a cedar block.
I entered the piece and won 1st Place in Sculpture in the Cape Cod Art Center 2021 New England Invitational Exhibit. Soon after, I became a member and Juried Artist and was invited to install my metal pieces in the Center’s Sculpture Garden.
Each stainless-steel sculpture requires a custom mounting for installation on the collector’s property. I can work with the collector on a suitable mounting system, or the collector may choose another resource they are comfortable with. In either case, I will help ensure that the piece is properly, esthetically and safely installed.
I can also design custom interior and exterior creatures and scenes to fit a particular interest or location. Metal sculptures are more expensive to produce and their cost is at the mercy of current metal prices. They can also be cut in aluminum, copper and bronze.
