Artist Statement
I have been blessed with the opportunity to photograph around the world, but the primary inspiration for my work is the ocean. Living on Cape Cod there are endless opportunities to get lost behind my camera as the sunrise or sunset unfolds.
I like to think of the beach as having three major compositional elements: sky, water and sand. I look for compositions that combine these key elements in unique ways by using different perspectives, angles and shutter speeds. My goal is to try and capture how I experienced the movement of the water, the colors of the sky and the textures of the sand interacting on the that day.
While both sunrise and sunset light is beautiful on the Cape, my favorite time to work is at sunrise. I usually arrive predawn, so I can get my gear setup and be ready for the new day to arrive. I find being alone on the beach with just the sound of the waves and my camera is a very peaceful way to start the day. There is one sunrise that not only starts a new day but also starts a new year. For over the past 10 years I have been photographing the sunrise on New Year’s Day. My favorite images from this project can be found on my website at: https://www.davidlearphotography.com.
As a juried member of the Cape Cod Art Center my images have been displayed in multiple CCAC art shows, the Field Gallery in Martha’s Vineyard and the FotoNostrum Gallery in Barcelona. In addition, my images have been published in Cape Cod Magazine, the AARP 2022 calendar as well as other local publications.
