ILLUMINATED LETTERS with ELLEN DUARTE
Wednesday, August 28th, 9:30 am – 12:00 pm, $40 Member / $50 Non-member
Illuminated letters are hand painted embellishments of a letter, generally the first letter a paragraph, or title. Ellen Duarte will demonstrate and instruct students in the creation of an illuminated letter decorated with botanical features. These beautiful letters make great gifts, note cards, and can be printed on any printable surface.
Artist Bio: Ellen Duarte has been creating art almost every year since taking up botanical illustration more than a decade ago, when she began her studies at Wellesley College Botanic Garden. She earned her Certificate of Botanical Illustration in 2015. Ellen grew up in Maine and raised her family on Cape Cod. She currently resides in Centerville and is still frequently visiting Maine.

Professional or artist quality watercolor paints:
Bring what you have. If you have none, and wish to purchase some, Winsor and Newton has a set of 12 professional quality watercolor paints (5 mil. tubes) which I have found on Amazon for as little as $49. This set has a good range of colors to start with. If you prefer to buy individually, the following is a suggested list in order of usefulness. 5 mil. tubes will last a long time, so buy small, if you can. All are Winsor and Newton, but are available in other brands:
Permanent Rose
Winsor Lemon
French Ultramarine
Permanent Sap Green
Payne’s Gray
Scarlet Lake
New Gamboge
Winsor Blue Green Shade
Burnt Sienna
Yellow ochre
Lemon Yellow Nickel Titonate
Other recommended brands are Daniel Smith, Schminke, M.Graham, and several others, as long as they are of artist or professional quality.
Some art supply websites are Blick, Gerry’s Artarama, Jackson Arts, Wind River Arts(brushes), Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff, and more. Locally, you can find paints and other decent materials at Michael’s and Hobby Lobby, as well as at Woodruff’s at Mashpee Commons and Tree’s Place in Orleans.
