Description:
Join photographer John Tunney for a 6-day/5-night fall photo adventure exploring Downeast Maine and beyond. We begin on Maine’s Mid-coast, travel through southern Maine out to Lubec, ME, the eastern most point in the U.S., onto Campobello Island in southern New Brunswick, Canada, and then Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park. Along the way you’ll photograph dramatic coastlines, working harbors, lobster boats, lighthouses, old New England towns and much more. In addition to fall foliage, we’ll be traveling during the end of Milky Way season when the galactic core is visible between 8-9pm. We’ll take advantage of clear nights to photograph the stars in dark skies over beautiful locations of Downeast Maine.
The workshop is limited to a maximum 8 students. John will offer tips and techniques in the field and classroom to help you get the most out of your experience in Maine and develop your skills.
Instruction includes:
– Classic and creative landscape and travel photography techniques
– Long exposure and camera movement
– Creative use of Depth of Field
– How to photograph the Milky Way
– Use of filters
– Editing landscapes and coastal scenes
Lodging
Five nights lodging in area hotels is included.
Getting Around
We’ll meet in the Rockland, ME, area the first day. It’s about four hours from Cape Cod or three hours from Boston. We’ll travel in our own vehicles to each hotel, and then car pool to the field sessions in order to minimize parking.
Day 1
We’ll meet in Maine’s Mid-coast near Rockland in the mid afternoon. After an introductory session early supper, we’ll head out for a late-afternoon/sunset field shoot. If the stars and weather align, we’ll continue into the night for some Milky Way photography. We’ll spend the night close to Rockland Harbor.
Day 2
We’ll be up early for a sunrise/early morning session. After breakfast, we’re on the road heading for Lubec, Maine. On the way, we’ll stop to photograph life and scenes of Downeast Maine. In Lubec, we’ll visit West Quoddy Lighthouse and explore the shores of this quaint working waterfront town. We’ll spend tonight and tomorrow night in Lubec in a waterfront inn.
Day 3
After and early morning session, we cross the bridge into Canada and will spend the day exploring Campobello Island. Highlights include the island’s coastline on the Bay of Fundy with its dramatic tides, scenic Roosevelt Campobello International Park (site of FDR’s summer retreat), Head Harbor Light and maybe even collect some sea glass at Pollock Cove. We’ll spend the night back at our inn in Lubec.
Days 4 and 5
We’ll spend part of the morning exploring the eastern edge of Maine and then head west to Acadia National Park, making stops to photograph Maine’s blueberry barrens and other sites. In Acadia, we’ll photograph the area’s dramatic coastline, woodlands and other scenes, including Jordan Pond, Eagle Lake and more. We’ll have early morning/sunrise, afternoon/sunset and Milky Way sessions, plus time for instruction and image reviews. We’ll be staying in Bar Harbor both nights.
Day 6
We’ll be up early for a sunrise/early morning session. After breakfast it’s time to say goodbye and hit the road to head home.
