This July Sandy’s work appears in The Artist’s Magazine. She is a Master Artist and instructor at the Cape Cod Art Center and a Signature Member of both the Hudson Valley Art Association and the Northwest Watercolor Society where she won a Silver Medal in their 75th International Exhibition in Seattle. In 2019 and 2022, the prestigious Copley Society of Art in Boston awarded her with consecutive residency fellowships at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown and the Cape Ann Museum in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Sandy is the first and only Copley Artist to achieve this status. https://www.sandyoconnorartist.com/
SUGGESTED MATERIALS LIST
Bring whatever supplies you may have already to the first class and fill in as you go along. Most items are available online at Amazon, Cheap Joe’s, Jerry’s Artarama, Utrecht, Dick Blick, Art Supply Warehouse, etc. Or locally try Woodruff’s in Mashpee Commons and Michael’s in Hyannis.
• Paint: I recommend Winsor and Newton® Artists Watercolour paint. Other brands such as M. Graham, Daniel
Smith are fine too. Please try to avoid student grade unless you have no choice due to availability, budget, etc.
I work with a very limited palette for a more harmonious result. Listed here are basic colors to get you started:
Need to have: New Gamboge (warm transparent yellow), Aureolin Yellow, Alizarin Crimson, Rose
Madder, French Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue, Cerulean Blue, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna
Nice to have: Opera Rose, Bismuth Yellow
• Palette: John Pike’s “Big Well”, Cheap Joe’s watercolor palette, or similar. Instructions for loading your palette will be covered in class. Cheap Joe’s offers a light weight, deep well palette that’s easy to transport to class.
• Brushes: I prefer sable or natural hair brushes to synthetics but there are some amazing blends on the market today. (I’m not a brand loyalist.) Stay within your budget but try not to skimp on quality either.
2″ pure bristle (available at hardware stores), or similar flat brush
1″ flat
¼” flat
#12 round
#9 or 10 round
#4 pointed round
#3 fan
#1 or 2 rigger
• Paper: Arches 140 gsm cold-pressed watercolor paper, sheets (22 x 30) or blocks no smaller than 9 x 12. Try to find Bright White or if you prefer, a Warm White. Both work well for landscapes.
• Portable Drawing Board: Unfinished soft-wood with or without metal edges, Gator Board approx. 18 x 24 in. or larger if you prefer.
• Plastic containers: To hold water. Two 32 oz yogurt or similar. (Translucent soup containers are excellent!)
• Tape: Artist Masking Tape, 1” width to tape down paper. It should bond, but remove easily with no residue.
• Paper towels: white Bounty® is best
Miscellaneous:
• Art Masking Fluid: Incredible White Mask® or Winsor & Newton® Masking Fluid, a few cheap, small brushes
dedicated to masking only. Small bar of soap for clean up.
• Stapler for flat stapling paper to board, staples, staple remover.
• Trace paper, sketch pad
• Saral® Wax Free Transfer Paper roll, Graphite. Available at Woodruff’s and online
• Miscellaneous: Note pad, HB or #2 pencil, ruler, ball point pen, kneaded eraser, Exacto® knife, scissors, small cellulose kitchen sponge, clean spray and squirt bottles for water.
