Pastels: Textures, Layers and Exploration – Betsy Payne Cook

Betsy Payne Cook

Demo 2 10:45-11:45AM

Pastels: Textures, Layers and Exploration

This demonstration will highlight how pastels can be combined with other mediums to create a textural painting. Preparing a board with gesso, mixed media, pumice ground and/or gel mediums renders a surface suitable for accepting layers of soft pastel. One  can control the amount of texture and the playful part is in what materials you use for a fine texture to a course raised surface.  Follow this up with a notan underpainting, blocking in main shapes with acrylic inks, watercolor, gouache, acrylic and/or pastel washes and you are ready to paint!

Betsy’s Bio

Betsy Payne Cook paints exclusively with pastels, and is honored to be a juried artist member of the Pastel Society of America and to have achieved signature membership status of the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod (PPSCC). Betsy is represented by Gallery Artrio in Hyannis and True Grit Gallery in Middleboro.  Betsy records her thoughts and experiences as an artist in her newsletter “Painting In and Out”.   Betsy attended the College of St. Rose in her home town of Albany, N.Y, earning a B.S. in Art Education & a M.S. in Special Education.
